`I want to do good films`: Tamanna

She is perhaps the youngest heroine in Tamil cinema. Tamanna had made her debut with KD and proved her mettle. The film bombed, but the young lady was optimistic and waited for the right breaks. Soon she was signed by none other than Balaji Sakthivel who had made that pathbreaking film Kathal. In fact, today Tammana is considered as the most promising star of Kollywood.
Today your Kaloori is releasing. Are you tensed?

Yes. I have butterflies in my stomach. So far God has been very kind to me. I am grateful to Balaji Sakthivel sir for trusting me and giving me this opportunity. I needed a film like Kaloori and am really glad it happened.
How was it working with Balaji Sakthivel?

He is an amazing director who is cool and confident. He acts out every scene and knows exactly what he wants from every artist. So this made things easy for all of us. We shot the entire film in 50 days. There was no tension on the sets as everything was planned and executed so meticulously. He is the sweetest person that I have met so far.
What is the character you play in Kaloori?

I play Shobana a city girl who comes to this small town. She is a soft, simple, balanced person who knows how to handle situations. The film is all about friendship and relationships shot in a realistic manner. I have not used any make-up and my look is very raw. And to get the right look, we took great care to tie up my hair tight and whenever I used to put a little bit of pressed powder, Chezhian sir, the cameraman used to ask me to wash my face before the shot.
Your hero is a new face. Please comment?

Akhil is a newcomer and believe me; we haven’t spoken much as language was a barrier. He is a very nice person and in the film he had to sit behind me on the scooty and he was very scared. I used to tell him not to worry and I will not let him fall (laughs).
So, what are your future plans?

I want to do good films. So far I have been blessed and I had a chance to meet some good people in both Tamil and Telugu industry. I have signed a film with Surya for `AVM productions` directed by K.V.Anand sir. I am also doing a film for `Oscar Films` with newcomer Siddharth as hero and directed by Gandhi Krishna sir. In Telugu, I have a film with Allu Arjun prodced by Allu Aravind and another one for producer M.S.Raju. Right now, I am keeping my fingers crossed for Kaloori results (smiles).

Vikram's magnum opus, the Lingusamy directed Bheema is finally getting out of its deep slumber and is almost certain to be the big Pongal 2008 release!

The first half Re-Recording (RR) of the film is complete. Harris Jayaraj and Editor Antony are raving about Bheema and have told their close friends –" It's awesome, never seen a movie so slick, racy and what a story!"

The second half re-recording is going on and the mixing is likely to start by the first week of December. Yuvan's great escape!

Yuvan Shankar Raja has bounced back to the top slot! Yuvan was down in the dumps as he was overshadowed by A.R Rahman and his ATM audio selling more than all his three Diwali releases- Kannanmoochi Yaenada, Machakaran, Vel put together. Music critics had rubbished Vel as his worst album, and sales were bad.

But post Diwali, with Hari's Vel emerging as the winner at Tamilnadu box-office, there is a huge grin on Yuvan's face, though his other two films failed to impress. Today two songs from Vel- Ottraikannale Une Pathe… sung by Haricharan and Sucharita picturised on Surya and Asin in Switzerland and Aayiram Janaal Veedu… sung by Premji, Rahul and Vadivel, and picturised on the happy family are topping the charts!

The irony of it is that pre-Diwali nobody wanted to buy Vel CD's as ATM music was a rage. Today the tables have been turned though ATM has far better tunes, picturisation and quality of music! The bottom line is that if a film becomes a hit, its music too slowly picks up with the listeners.

Monday (November 26), Yuvan has more reasons to celebrate, as the audio of Ajit's BillaBilla, which has two terrific re-mix numbers and three other songs which are sure going to be chartbusters. The music trade is expecting Yuvan's Billa audio to take as impressive opening as this years toppers A.R Rahman's Sivaji and ATM albums! will release across the world. Senthil is back in a crazy, comedy!

The veteran comedian Senthil, of the famous Goundamani-Senthil team of the 80’s and 90’s is now trying to make a comeback as a hero with the comic film Aadivasiyum Athisayapesiyum, being directed by Malan for BBC International.

According to Malan, the film has an interesting premise about a tribal's adventures when a cell phone lands in his hand from above! However the publicity stills and the one-line story of the film reminds you of the 1980 South African film The Gods must be crazy, which was a crazy and goofy movie about a African tribal who encounters technology for the first time in the form of a Coke bottle!

The film is to be shot in the forest areas of Malaysia and coastal Africa, from December 5. Aadivasiyum Athisayapesiyum is going to be a crazy non-stop laugh riot, especially when you have comedians like Senthil along with Mayilsamy, Vyapuri and Ramesh Aravind! ....

Karthi, Nayantara in Lingusamy film

Director Lingusamy, who is awaiting the release of Bheema, will commence his next venture with Paruthiveeran"s Karthi playing hero. Surya - the king of Diwali

It"s official. Finally a winner has emerged from the Box Office this Diwali and it is none other than Surya. The Surya – Asin starrer 'Vel' is placed well on the top of Kollywood box office charts. Its first week collection has set a new record and the advance booking of the film is still continuing in Chennai theaters even a week after its release. This typical Hari film with sentiment, comedy, fire like action and emotions in right proportions are the reasons behind the film being a super hit.In Chennai City, Shahrukh Khan starrer Om Shanti Om still maintained its superiority over Tamil films at the end of the first week after Diwali. Here is the list of top-5 films of this week:

Vel: Director- Hari. The positive word of mouth talk about the film and the family based action story is well suited to Surya"s stature. For distributors and exhibitors, Vel is the undisputed winner from among the Diwali releases this week. Particularly in B and C centers, the film is running like a 'Jallikattu Bull' and makes is making Surya a Box Office mass hero.

Azhagiya Tamil Magan: Director- Bharathan. Though the director worked hard to portray Vijay in different look and style, he failed to give a solid foundation via the script. AR Rehman's excellent tunes and Vijay's thrilling dances in the films songs is keeping the interest of the viewers and keeping them glued to the film. At the end of the first week, ATM is in the second position but one can assure that it wont be the same place in the next week.

Pollathavan: Director – Vetrimaaran. The debutant director's different approach, Dhanush"s realistic look and underplay in performance makes the film watchable. The film is slowly picking up after positive word of mouth and aggressive publicity.

Kannamoochi Enada: Director- Priya V. Produced by Radaan Media Works and directed by Priya V, it is a light romantic comedy inspired from the Hollywood film. But what made this film remain one of the lower names is that the director has not used the story and the actors well enough to get the best out of them. However Sathyaraj, Prithviraj and Radhika performed with ease thus making the movie watchable. Chances are few that the film will pick up in rural and semi urban centers.

Machakkaran: Director- Tamilvavan. This is definitely a hurdle for the fast growing actor Jeevan, who had given two big hits like Thiruttu Payale and Naan Avanillai. It has earned the name of being the most boring film released this Diwali.

Vijay very happy with ATM

Vijay said that his fans have not accepted the story of his latest releases Azhagiya Tamil Magan that is the reason for the films second position in the top 5 films. In an interview the actor said, "When director Bharathan had narrated the story to me, I realized that it is indeed a different story from the regular film stories. That is why I had accepted the movie. Even after the announcement of the film, I had told everyone that ATM is a totally different movie and that one should get ready to indeed to watch a different film from me. Now after the release, I agree that there was definitely a mixed response to it in the first three days of its release, but now after watching the film two or three times they have started appreciating the subject." ....

Thirumagan's next film announced

Thirumurugan, the successful filmmaker who came from the small to silver screen via Emdan Magan', has finalized his second film. This is the film based on the story of village young man who joins a college and the problems he causes there. According to the director, Bharath will play the lead role too in this film and the film will have the same cast and crew.The film has been tentatively titled as Muniyandi-Vilangiyal Moonramaandu but it may be changed anytime before the launch of the film. A Malaysia based production company Lotus Five Star will produce the film. Thiru Pictures is plays the role of the films co-producer while it is being made. According to the director, he is yet to be finalized the heroine and other cast. Vidhyasagar will score the music for this film too. I will give all the details in a week or too. Till then, please wait", the director told.

Arjun not Surya - Vishnuvardhan's next hero

Director Vishnuvardhan clarified that the hero of his next project Sarvam will be Arjun, not Surya. A few days back Ayngaran Films International has announced that they would be launched a movie, which Vishnuvardhan will direct in which Surya will play the lead role. Now there is been a change in the cast of the film. It is not Surya but Arjun who will act as hero in Sarvam. Interestingly Arya will also act in the movie in the second lead role.This clearly means Surya is out of the project and the buzz is that the star did not agree with Vishnu's script. Surya who is now in US shooting for Gautham Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram had given Vishnu priority dates from the last week of January 2008. Vishnu's favourite cast and crew - Yuvan Shankar Raja and Nirav Shah - are also likely to be a part of this musical thriller, which will be shot most likely in Munnar by mid December.

Rehman retunes Tamizhthai Vazhthu!

Neerarum Kadaludutha... is the invocation to Mother Tamil, the Goddess of Dravidian culture for many years and the same was composed by legendary MSV nearly three decades ago. Now musician AR Rehman would like to retune the song with the approval of the Govt of Tamil Nadu. According to the sources the musical work would be started from coming April 2008.Rahman has taken this decision after an open request made by veteran director Baalu Mahendra, a close associate to Maestro Ilayaraja (all the songs in his 26 movies were composed by Raja only) during the audio launch of Kallori recently. All other VIP's who attended the function backed Baalu and applauded loudly.Bakkim Chandra Chatterjee's Vande Matharam with Rehman's tune had rocked the nation for a decade. Priyamani replaces Rajini

Don't assume anything after reading the headline. Priyamani has been chosen to light the traditional Kuthuvilakku at the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa starting November 23 along with the 'Bollywood Baadshah' Shahrukh Khan! (We hope it may be her route to Bollywood, apart her being talented enough to get there.)For Priyamani, it is a big honour and good recognition that she is getting for her excellent career. This honour has been given to her for her performance in Paruthiveeran, which got her the best actress award at 9th Osian Cinefan Awards, which were held in New Delhi. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, which recommended her name in the south Indian actor category, after Tamil superstar Rajinikanth politely refused to inaugurate the function.

After hearing the good news, Priyamani couldn't believe it. After confirming the news, she immediately shared her joy with all her friends and director Ameer who is the reason for her success. Priyamani said: "For most of the actors, it is a dream to share the stage with Shahrukh, the King Khan of Bollywood. It is really a great honour to be chosen to light the lamp at Goa IFFI and that too representing south cinema in the place of the super star."

Director Hari is on a high after the success of his recent release 'Vel'. The movie starring Surya and Asin has won rave reviews and is placed on the top of the list at the box office. With the success of Vel, Hari is quick to commence his next film. Hari, who is called a minimum guarantee director, will direct Bharath for his next movie, which will be produced by a new producer.Addressing media persons in Chennai Wednesday, Hari said," The movie would be produced by MA Jinnah of Jinnah Creations. I have signed up for this film but it will take about 3 months to shape up the script. I plan to start this movie March 2008. It would be an action packed entertainer with the right mix of sentiments and comedy like my other films. I'm in search for the star cast. I'm planning to cast a familiar face as a heroine. It is always safe for me and my producer too!", he said.

Admitting himself to be a non-creative director, Hari said, "I wouldn't like to try with different subjects with the producer's money. I will always be a producer's delight." Speaking on Vel, he said, "I know that the story of the film is not very strong but the performance of artists and racy script is the cause for this success." Bharath, the hero of the movie, also attended the press meet and expressed his joy in collaborating wit Hari.

Kamal`s new look in Dasavatharam

The first official stills of Dasavatharam are out. Kamal Haasan plays 10 characters for which he has dubbed in 10 different voices. Asin has given her own voice to her character and that too in Brahmin Tamil which has come out brilliantly.

The Visual Effects have been handled by three different software companies. Each one has employed about a hundred of the best graphics designers to deliver the desired output. Some of the leading writers who have listened to the narration from Kamal say that the screenplay is more exciting than some of his phenomenally successful blockbusters of the past like Thevar Magan and Aboorva Sagotharargal.

The care and safety measure the Americans take in executing some of the difficult stunts is meticulous. The thrilling fights Kamal has performed were not done with the help of computer graphics.

One more son rise!

The year 2007 has seen more 'son rise' than ever before in Kollywood. The latest to join the bandwagon is Ashwin, son of comedian and politician S.Ve Shekhar ,the Mylapore MLA.
Ashwin is being launched as an action hero with Vegam, directed by K.V Udayashankar. Archana, from Mumbai is the heroine, and Sriman plays the deadly villain. And making a cameo appearance are Prabhu and Kushboo, along with S.Ve Shekhar. The music is provided by Rajesh Vaidya.
Ashwin is being launched as an action hero, and the entire second half of the film has been shot in Malaysia. Says S.Ve Shekhar: "It is a feel good action film which has all commercial ingredients to make it work with the audiences like songs, awesome action, beautiful locations and a good story."

Nayan stunned!

“Nayanthara’s mother found murdered”- was today (September 25) on the front page of an English daily, with Nayan’s picture published along with the report! The story datelined Sep 24 from Hyderabad says- “The brutal murder of a 45-year old woman, mother of upcoming South Indian actress Nayanthara, on Monday morning has shocked the residents of Madhuranagar. The victim Kamala Devi was staying with Nayanthara in the house. The miscreants decamped with 50 tolas of gold and some cash after killing the woman.”
It was a terrible mix-up due to irresponsible journalism of the worst kind. A junior artist in Telugu films, who had named herself Nayanthara to cash in on the famous actress, was the ‘heroine’ of the story. The reporter, who filed the story without checking facts, blew it up and published a file picture of the more famous and well known Nayanthara along with the story!
Meanwhile the one and only Nayanthara blissfully unaware of the news paper report was woken up at a Chennai five star hotel, early in the morning. Nayan after reading the report was livid with rage and called up her mother Omana Kurian in Thiruvalla, and informed her about this shocking incident!
Nayan is currently the ‘numero uno’ Telugu actress, and the mischievous mix-up happened because her name sells. She does not own any property in Hyderabad, and normally stays at the Taj Krishna whenever she is in town. On Monday, when the junior artist’s mother was murdered, Nayan was not in Hyderabad. She was shooting for Sathyam in Chennai!
To add fuel to fire, many Kollywood personalities received SMS messages asking them to convey their condolence to the actress! Says Nayan: “It is an irresponsible act by this leading newspaper. I am consulting my lawyers on how to handle this nasty and malicious report. I can handle any kind of nonsense written about me but why drag my poor mother into all this?”

The first family of Tamilnadu, Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi, his wife Dayalu Ammal and son Local Administration Minister M.K Stalin came for a special screening of the film Malaikottai at Four Frames preview theatre in Chennai.
A thrilled director Bhoopathi Pandian said: "I think everybody enjoyed the movie, and the CM himself a brilliant script director asked me to remove a particular scene as it was too long. His eye for detail is amazing."

A name change!

Jeeva's much touted Tamil M.A has gone for a title change to avail itself of entertainment tax benefit. Now the film will be known as Katrathu Tamil (I learned Tamil), and its release date too has been changed from Sep 28 to October 5.
Katrathu Tamil is a realistic story of a Tamil M.A graduate who goes from pillar to post looking for a job. Director Ram an associate of Balu Mahendra has tried to show the difficulties faced by a Tamil M.A graduate in getting a job even in a government college!
Jeeva had reduced weight for the film in which he appears in three different get-up. The film has Jeeva and has new girl Anjali in the lead. It has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, and the film is about the life and times of Prabhakar, a man who has devoted his life for the upliftment of the Tamil language.
Comedy actor Karunas was so impressed with Katrathu Tamil, that he has purchased the entire Tamilnadu rights of the film! Says Karunas: "The film is amazing, and will be a trendsetter. We are releasing it big; in Chennai alone 7 screens will show the movie." ....

Vasanth has once again proved that he is a director with a difference with Sathum Podaathay a thriller mixed with some soft romance and peppy music. Padmapriya, the pivot around which the film revolves has given a riveting performance and is the pick of the film.
In these hard days when only larger than life heroes in outdated mass masalas work at the box-office, Vasanth has been bold to experiment with a subject that is daring. One of the major highlights of the film is the songs and background score of Yuvan Shankar Raja.
The story revolves around Bhanu (Padmapriya) who gets married to Ratnavel (Nitin Satya) a guy who works in railways as he is a sportsman. But soon the relationship turns sour, when the couple realize after a gynecologist ( Suhasini in a cameo) tells them that Ratnavel is impotent. In spite family pressures to get a mutual divorce, the old fashioned Bhanu decides to go ahead with the marriage by adopting a child.
But with the arrival of the baby, Ratnavel becomes more insecure and tells her that the child reminds him about his weakness! And all hell breaks lose when Bhanu realizes that her husband was an alcoholic who knew about his impotency and had betrayed her. She walks out on him. Bhanu meets Ravichandran (Pritviraj) a happy-go-lucky guy who proposes to her. But Ratnavel who had vowed to make life miserable for Bhanu returns. What next? You have to watch the film.
Songs like Azhagu Kutty Chellam…. and Pesugiren, Pesugiren… is class apart but their placement could have been better and they slow down the narration. The three hit numbers are slotted in the first half, and two of them end up with the same Bekal fort in the background! H.Sridhar’s audiography and Yuvan's background score needs special mention as for nearly 20 minutes towards the climax, there are no dialogues which give the thriller the necessary eerie feel.
On the down side, there is nothing new in the plot of the film, as a lot of similar stories of women married tormented by an obsessive psyche characters ending up battered, bruised and kidnapped have appeared earlier ( Darr, Anjaane, Chellamay, Sleeping with the Enemy among others). The character of Ratnavel could have been better etched out as we do not feel sympathy or empathy to his anguish and actions. But what works largely for the film are the performances of lead actors especially Padmapriya, Nitin Satya who is promising and Pritviraj.

Verdict: Thriller

On Friday (Sep 14), the audio launch of the Dhanush- Divya (Kuthu Ramya’s new name in Tamil) starrer Pollathavan took place at Green Park, in Chennai.

The film is produced by ‘Five Star’Kathiresan and directed by debutant Vetrimaran. Dhanush who was spotted in a casual jeans and shirt was extremely friendly to the guests and personally seen receiving the guests.

G.V Prakash the 20-year old music director of the film told the gathering that it is his fifth film, and he is sure the music of the film like his earlier Kireedam will rock .

Balu Mahendra praised the young director whom he says is a good organizer, necessary to give the perfect touch to a film. Dhanush also had good words about Vetri, with whom he had discussed many stories before zeroing in on Polladhavan.
