Musician-actor Shruti Haasan is all set to pay tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson on August 29. A group of young singers will be performing live in Chennai as a tribute to the late pop star. Unnaipol Oruvan is sure to be special to film fans both in Tamil and Malayalam. During the first weekend of Sarvam’s show, trailers for ‘Thoranai’ were screened. Know what an audience in the front row said, “Please Vishal! Stop making silly commercial movies and you’re comedy sense is awkward...” This is clearly because of his non-comical sense in Malaikottai that seemed to be quite odd...

We aren’t able to figure out why Vishal is constantly glued to commercial cinemas. He can better quit acting and go for making films as he has good experiences working as assistant director.

As we all know Aish is shooting for two Tamil films back to back. One is the Shankar directed magnum opus ‘Endhiran’ that has Superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai pairing up for the first time. This project has been in the news for the heroine bagging a whooping six crore rupees for signing up the project.

The other film is by ace director Mani Ratnam. This film is a multi lingual project and is being simultaneously shot in Hindi with Ash and hubby doing the lead roles. The Tamil remake of the film sees Chiyan Vikram and Ash in the lead roles. This flick’s title seems to have been inspired from the epic Ramayana and has hence been titled ‘Raavan’.

The story deals with the hero kidnapping another man’s wife and the fate that befalls.

The music for both the films will be by the twin Oscar award winner A.R. Rahman. Another interesting factor is that Rajinikanth’s daughter Aishwarya Rajinikanth will be lending her voice for Ash’s character in Shankar’s ‘Endhiran’ as well as Mani Rathnam’s ‘Raavan’. Sultan Rajini is in trouble!

We managed to get Soundarya Rajnikant, daughter of the Tamil supremo Rajnikant (and India’s highest paid actor with the largest fan base) to part with images of her first animated feature Sultan that is slated for a 2009 release. Incidentally this movie will release before the Rajni-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan flick The Robot.

Rumours down South have it that Soundarya’s production house and the Hollywood giant who were to co-produce Sultan have parted ways. But it actually turned out that Sultan is being made in partnership with a film corporation.

In a statement to BT, Richard Fox, Executive Vice-President International of the foreign studio, said, “We have been and will continue to work with Soundarya Rajnikant. Together, our companies have a number of southern Indian language projects in various stages, from early negotiations to active development. We will announce these projects at the appropriate time. But, any rumour that suggests otherwise is simply not true.”

When contacted, Soundarya said, “Our multi-picture deal contract with the foreign studio is positively intact as plans are on to jointly produce films in all four South Indian Languages, contrary to the untoward rumours doing the rounds in the Industry.”

Soundarya is exalted because her ‘appa’ (father) was very excited during the shoot and was surprised when he saw the first look of the film that this paper is currently being unveiled by this newspaper. Oscar winner A R Rahman has recorded four songs and two are yet to be done, says the star-daughter; and of course, “Daddy is yet to dub for his movie. He will do it after he has seen the final output.’’

I’m an entertainer, not a hero: Vishal

Actor Vishal, whose ‘Thoranai’ will hit screens next Friday, says he has tired playing not a hero, but an entertainer in his forthcoming flick. Directed by Saba Ayyappan, the film is a bilingual, called ‘Pista’ in Telugu.

“While I’ve constantly been working in films as an action hero, this is the first time that I think I have been given my due as an actor who can do comedy. As the film was slated to release for summer, we wanted to do a film that will be enjoyable to all. And sans unbelievable heroism, I have opted for some good entertaining fare in the film,” says the actor, who says he thinks action comes good to him. “I don’t know how good I am in dance or in romance, but I think I am good when it comes to action,” he said.

Agreeing to reports that suggested that his face was losing its sheen owing to excessive exercises, the actor said he took the comments in his stride and will work about it. “My mother has also pointed out that the glow in my face has dwindled. I sometimes think of the producer who saw me and said “someone like you can never be a hero’. Everytime I see the mirror I think of him. I’m glad I am in a better state today, because the very same producer came to me looking for dates for a film. I couldn’t accommodate him, however,” says the actor.

Rajni votes, Haasan not allowed to

While Tamil superstar Rajnikant voted for a "stable government" on Wednesday, thespian actor Kamal Haasan was unable to cast his ballot since his name was not on the electoral rolls.

After casting his vote, Rajnikant told reporters that he had voted to ensure a stable government at the centre.

Kamal Haasan cancelled his shooting schedule for the polls but could not cast his vote.

"My name is not on the list of voters. I am not alone. My brother Chandra Haasan also could not cast his vote," the actor said.

Kanthaswamy’s grand audio launch plans

South Indian film actress and politician Shruthi Friday said she will be marrying journalist turned film director Chandrachud alias Chakri after the court accepts her plea for divorce from director S. Mahendar whom she married early 1998.

Talking to IANS from the temple town of Tirupati, Shruthi said she had decided to marry Chandrachud only Thursday after seeking the blessings of Lord Venkateshwara in Tirumala. She had filed the papers for divorce from Mahendar in the family court four days ago

"I cannot act against my conscience. Since a few days, I have been closer to Chandrachud and both of us decided to marry. I know Chandrachud is already married, but he is also facing some marital discontent in his household. We would be marrying each other only after our plea for divorce is accepted," Shruthi said.

Chandrachud, who is presently directing a Kannada film "Janma", also told IANS that he is marrying the actress after she gets her divorce. He said that since the decision to marry was mutual, it should not warrant any criticism from any end.

"There is no point in continuing a relationship which has been continuously strained. I tried to save my marriage many times and resurrect the strained relationship. But unfortunately it did not work. I now think I prolonged a relationship which could not be sustained. I am happy to come out of the relationship with Mahendar and enter into a new relationship with Chandrachud," said Shruthi, who also has a child with Mahendar.

Shruthi's decision has not been taken kindly by some of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders who have been privately criticising her. She is now the chairperson of the Karnataka Women and Child welfare Board and had campaigned extensively for the party in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Mysore Lok Sabha constituencies in the recently-held parliamentary elections.

However, some BJP leaders say she has saved the party from a big embarrassment as she had announced her decision to divorce her husband Mahendar and marry Chandrachud four days after the conclusion of the two-phase polling in Karnataka.

Since the issue surfaced, Mahendar has remained elusive and his whereabouts are not known. Even his close confidants in the film industry and many friends in his native town of Kollegal say that the director has become inaccessible. He has also switched off his mobile phone.

Director Susi Ganesan says the film’s storyline demanded a big budget. “In fact, we have not splurged just for the sake of it. We have spent where it is really necessary. “Vikram, playing a superhero in the flick, wears clothes worth Rs 75 lakh alone, while Shriya, whose glamour and acting will be a highlight in the movie, wears clothes worth a whopping Rs 1.25 crore,” he explains, putting the movies budget at over Rs 30 crore. “We wanted to shoot in new locations and toured and shot for a month in Mexico. We spent Rs 8 crores for shooting there, while some scenes and a song, shot in Itlay, cost us Rs 2 crore. Apart from these, being a superhero action adventure, the film has a lot of special effects. Actress Priyamani has been trying for eons to shed her serious actor image by shedding more clothes, but, finally, it looks like someone’s noticing. The National Award winning actress recently did a bikini act for the Telugu flick ‘Drona’, and now, reports have it that the actress has received a call for a photo shoot for Maxim cover.

Some of the best known bods in Bollywood have flaunted their physical riches for the cover of the gloss magazine, Maxim, and Priyamani seems to have been the latest south Indian heroine to have got the call. Earlier, both Asin and Shriya have been on Maxim covers.

A doe-eyed beauty, a divine beauty, all these words and more come to mind when Shriya Saran’s name is mentioned. Her innocence radiating from the screen, coupled with sensuousness has sent her fans, especially men, into mindless frenzy. Mani Ratnam permitted to shoot in forest area

Ace director Mani Ratnam, the shooting of whose latest multilingual film Ravana was stopped by the Kerala Forest department last week, has been given conditional sanction on Tuesday to continue shooting in the Malayatoor forest near Kochi.

Earlier, shooting was stopped on Friday and the forest officials asked the crew to pack up after they found that the crew had constructed huts inside the forest, which was against the terms of sanction.

According to new sanction, the crew numbers are restricted to 150. Shooting is permitted between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. only. There should not be any fight scenes in the location and no bushes or trees should be destroyed. No plastic material can be used. Besides, the filmmakers have been asked to remit a fee of Rs. 10,000 per day of shooting. The number of vehicles allowed inside the forest has also been drastically reduced. Reports said that the case registered by the forest department will continue.

Prior to the violations, all what they were charged was a mere Rs. 1,000 for the entire duration of the shoot. Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, who are part of the project, are expected to arrive next week. Prominent stars like Vikram, Govinda, Prithviraj and Priyamani will also participate. Reports indicate that the filming inside the forest included a battle where over 500 people were to take part.

Mani Ratnam is making this film in Hindi and Tamil simultaneously. Vikram will play the villain while Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai is the lead pair in Hindi; Vikram will play the lead opposite Aishwarya in Tamil. The film is based on the grand epic Ramayana.

Vaaranam Aayiram, the latest from director Gautham Menon, is also based on a poignant experience. Dealing with the relationship between a father and a son, it was inspired by Gautham's own feelings when he lost his father.
The story, progressing from the youthful stage of the lead character, spans the next two phases of his life comprising his adolescence and adulthood. Surya (Suriya) is an ordinary young man, leading a quiet life with his parents Krishnan (Suriya) and Malini (Simran). Priya Mani to play Surpanakai

Kerala Forest Department says 'No'to Mani Ratnam

After he has already completed 5 days of filming there for Ravana, the Kerala Forest Department has stopped Mani Ratnam from filming his latest bilingual in the jungles of Malayathur as it is comes under its protected and reserve areas.

Mani Ratnam is holding talks with the forest department officials to continue with his filming, trying to assure them that his unit will not damage the area or upset its ecological balance. But the Forest Department is concerned some of the conditions set by it have already been broken and the filming is planned to be held for 20 days more.

Mani Ratnam has decided to shoot his bilingual in the forests of Sri Lanka if there is no progress in his talks with the officials. But with the protests from Tamil film industry against the genocide in Sri Lanka, it would be highly inappropriate to hold his filming there right away.

Mallika Sherawat as Silk Smitha

A biopic will be made on the legendary Kollywood glamour actress Silk Smitha, without whom a film was considered incomplete in the 80s. Ekta Kapoor, queen of television soaps and daughter of yesteryear Bollywood actor Jeetendra, is making this biopic in Hindi. When the astute producer decided to make a film on this actress whose personal life was rife with many depressing incidents eventually leading to her suicide in 1996, she had already decided Mallika Sherawat would play her on the screen.

There is no word yet on whether this biopic will be made in Tamil as well, as Smitha worked extensively in the Tamil film industry. Ramarajan returns

The words "Ramarajan is back" will delight every fan of the cult classic Karagattakkaran and anyone who enjoys films shot in rustic backdrops reflecting rural sentiments and lifestyle. With several such films, Ramarajan became the quintessential "villager on the silver screen". He became a living legend in small towns and villages of Tamil Nadu and within a short span, he was Kollywood's Midas.

Now, this great actor is back but with a difference. It had already been announced that he will act in Medhai in the lead role. Now, further details of the film have been announced with its shooting about to start soon. This time too, Ramarajan will take on the baddies, romance his heroine, join his sidekick and make merry; but he will do all this in a city. Medhai is a commercial entertainer whose story takes place in a city and the film has an abundance of comedy, romance, sentiments and all other masala elements needed for making a grand entertainer.

Though out of a rural backdrop, the 'Ramarajan effect' will be unaltered as he has a reliable partner in Vadivelu, and they both are going to rock in Medhai! Medhai will be directed by N.T.G. Saravanan, who had worked as an assistant to the "commercial cinema expert" Hari.

Story, screenplay and dialogues too have been written by this brilliant student, who would like to emulate his teacher Hari and produce commercial hits. The support cast comprises Charlie, Mahadevan, Ajay, Aryan, Harirajan, Hasini, Sona Nayar and K. Nataraj. Talks are on with several new faces and experienced actresses for the female lead role and soon, we will know who bags the role.

A confident Ramarajan says, "It gives me immense pleasure to come back to films, which I love as much as I love my life. Medhai is for my fans and it will have all that they expect from me. This film shall serve as my comeback vehicle. Music of this film, which is scored by Dhina, is excellent. And with Vadivelu's comedy track, the film will be more attractive. My fans will enjoy Medhai."

J. Sreedhar is the cinematographer, music is by Dhina and lyrics are by Gangai Amaran, Yugabharathy, Muthuvijayan, Parinaman and Muthulingam. The film is being produced under the banner of Kalaimagal Koodam. It would be a delight to watch Ramarajan back in action again. Will Medhai give us something like the memorable "vazahippazham joke" again? We will have to wait and see.

Murali's son debuts in Anandam Aarambam

Producer Ramanathan and Pyramid Saimira, who are producing a film in which Atharva (evergreen actor Murali's son) makes his debut have named it aptly Anandam Aarambam (AA), which means the fun begins.

Yes! It is indeed Anandam Aarambam for Atharva, who starts his film career as a hero just like his father did years ago. The tall and handsome actor had to change his name from Vijay to Atharva as the industry already has a Vijay.

He is a first year engineering student (electronics and communication). Murali, a protective father, zeroed in on the script of AA after scrutinizing numerous scripts that came his son's way; ever since Atharva attained age 16, he has been deluged with film offers. Atharva is not the only highlight of AA.

Shruthi, also making her debut in films, perfectly complements Atharva and augments the film's appeal. This young and beautiful girl, who epitomizes the girl-next-door image, has a pleasant smile and mischievous eyes. Together, these youth form the backbone of this film and make it lively.

AA is directed by debutante director Vishnu Shankaran, who has also written its story. Cinematography is by Dinesh Kumar. Music is by Sundar C. Babu and lyrics are by Yugabharathi and Kavi Varman.

AA will be launched on October 9th at Kamarajar Hall. Rajinikanth's fans start political party

In an attempt to spur Rajinikanth to enter politics, his fans have started a political party - Desiya Dravida Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (DDMMK). But it cannot be construed as Rajinikanth's political move; it is a decision taken by his fans, not by him. This act seems to be the culmination of a week of tension amidst his fans following the star's call for a meeting with fan clubs, tentatively on October 12th.

This announcement has given rise to many speculations about the meet's agenda: ranging from brainstorming to boost his star power to launching a political party; coming in the wake of Chiranjeevi's political party launch, Rajni's call for a meeting has made many think he too might announce a political party. At present, the star is busy with Robot's first tranche of filming. His meeting with his fan clubs, when he reveals his ideas, should put an end to speculations.

Meghna Naidu: No item numbers for me

Meghna Naidu has been refusing all the offers of dancing in item numbers. Meghna explains, "I am refusing all these item numbers as I want to establish myself as an actress, not as an item song expert. I am a glamorous actress and not an item girl. I can earn millions by doing item numbers but that is not what I want to do. I want to be counted among the best actors in the film industry." This sensuous-eyed actress considers comic roles as the toughest and would like to try her hand at comedy. She also added that she would like to do more challenging roles. Meghna Naidu riveted everyone's attention when she danced beautifully to the tune of 'Kaliyon Ka Chaman'.

Her last film in Tamil was Vaitheeshwaran opposite Sarathkumar and she did an item number in Panthayam, which stars Nithin Sathya and Sindhu Tolaani. Well, this glamorous actress has a valid point. Rather than wasting her time in silly roles or item numbers, she could very well be cast in roles embodying boldness and beauty, just like Rahasiya's role of a journalist in the yet-to-be-released Indra Vizha. She could even be cast in comic roles as she desires and there is no doubt she will sizzle in them. Bollywood's Celina Jaitley, who has done quite a lot of comedy roles, is an example and there are slight similarities between them too!

Vikram-Ash to film in Kerala

Now that Vikram has completed his part in Susi Ganesan's Kanthasamy and Aishwarya Rai is on the verge of completing the first schedule of Robot (probably by October 8th) Mani Ratnam has decided to start shooting his bilingual film. The news is that he will start with the Tamil version first and will film scenes pertaining to Vikram and Aishwarya in dense forests of Salakkudi, Kerala; filming begins on October 10th.

Mani Ratnam is making this film in Hindi and Tamil. The Tamil version features Vikram in the lead role and pairs him up with Aishwarya Rai; Prithviraj plays the villain. After a long time, actor Karthik will work with Mani Ratnam, who made him a household name with Mouna Ragam and Agni Natchathiram. The Hindi version features Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead.

Vikram makes his Bollywood debut in this version; he will reprise the role done by Prithviraj in Tamil. Meanwhile, Aishwarya Rai is extremely happy for finally being able to act with Rajinikanth, who, according to her, is a family friend. Aishwarya Rai, while giving an interview in Gurgaon while inaugurating a boutique, said that she is enjoying acting with Rajinikanth. She said that it was a learning experience to work with stalwarts like Rajinikanth and director Shankar.

She also added that she has heard her father-in-law (Amitabh Bachchan) praising Rajinikanth's humility, but when she witnessed it in person, she could not believe her eyes. She also added that she considers Rajinikanth a "wonder man", who has managed to be so simple despite being the most popular film star.

Exhibitors, distributors to boycott 'Kuselan' producers

CHENNAI: Tamil superstar Rajnikant may have promised Rs.100 million compensation to distributors of his box office flop "Kuselan", but exhibitors and distributors Friday announced a non-cooperation movement against the film's producers and the actor.

Small exhibitors and distributors across the state are angry with producer Pushpa Kandaswamy for blaming main distributor Pyramid Saimira for the losses, industry sources said.

"Exhibitors Pyramid Saimira's bosses saw the film a week before release, hiked its costs by publicity hype and hiked the ticket prices, going against the sane advice of Rajnikanth, and are responsible for the losses. Further, no film can be written off within 20 days of its release," Kandaswamy, daughter of director K. Balachander, said Thursday.

S. Palaniappan, head of a distributors' organisation, earlier this week complained that the distributors were taken for a ride by the producers, who claimed it was a full length Rajnikanth film, though he featured only for a little over 20 minutes.

The stir by distributors is likely to hit Kandaswamy's production house Kavithalaya. Its forthcoming releases, which include the Arjun-starrer "Thiruvannamalai" and "Krishna Leelai" are banking on the smaller distributors and exhibitors, who have now threatened to boycott the films.

Meanwhile, industry sources said that Rajnikant has asked producer Panchu Arunachalam to make a quick film and market it at a discount to help distributors.

'US is the real hero of movie Meiporul'

IT'S touted as the first Tamil film to be shot entirely in the US and the excitement doesn’t end there. 'Meiporul' is special to the Tamil film fraternity for sentimental reasons too.

It’s the debut film of NRI civil engineer turned film producer and director Natty Kumar, son of producer TN Janakiraman of MR Arts Fame. The audio launch of the film was marked by the presence of several producers who lauded the efforts of the youngster.

As dad Janakiraman put it, “Since Natty became an engineer and settled in the US, I never imagined that one day I would be introducing him as a producer and director, carrying on my film lineage. It’s a very satisfying moment for me”

Dreams on Frames’ 'Meiporul' is a family suspense thriller, produced by Natty Kumar and Krishna Bala and has several American technicians. The background score is by John Masey while the camera has been handled by Chris Elridge. Lenin edits while Rahul debuts as the music director with this film.

Speaking on the occasion, S Ve Sekar remarked, “It's very courageous of Natty to make a film like this, spending in dollars, without even knowing the outcome of it. The film looks slick and America seems to be the real hero in it.” So what made Natty take up this film? “My dad gave me an Indian education while my wife made me go back to school in the US!” quipped Natty.

“Thanks to her encouragement, I did a film technology course in the US and the movie is the outcome of my interest in filmmaking.” The film’s co-producer, Krishna Bala was an IT geek in Napster before the film bug bit him too.

With more and more people from various backgrounds making Tamil films, looks like there are good times ahead for the film industry.

'It took me weeks to forget Ayyanar'-Aadhi

IN an image driven industry, it takes sheer courage for a debutant hero to play Aadhi’s role in Mirugam. A rough, arrogant, violent, sexually overactive, rustic character who ends up an AIDS victim, turning hollow eyed, balding and emaciated is not everyone’s idea of a dream debut.

His debut can perhaps be compared to that of Karthi, who also courageously took on a rustic, self-transforming role in Paruthiveeran, both actors preferring performance over appearance and image. Aadhi too in actuality, is quite the opposite of his screen character. So who is Aadhi? How tough was Mirugam? What are his future plans in Kollywood?

No cakewalk

“I‘m a complete Chennaiite,” says the Don Bosco and Venkateshwara Engineering College graduate. A BE in Computer Engineering satisfied his dad Raviraja Pini Setty (actor and director of 60 Telugu films) who always kept him away from the uncertain cinematic world. “Till I joined movies I had never been to a film shooting!” grins Aadhi.

So why did he join films? “Actors from the film frat were doing it around me and when I acted in a play Galileo Galilei directed by Mu Ramasamy, I thought of giving films a shot,” he shrugs. The first break came with Teja’s Telugu film Oka V Chitram which didn’t do too well. He was disappointed and decided to discontinue and get a job.

But director Saamy spotted him at the YMCA at Pandian master’s Silambam class and offered him Mirugam. “Frankly I was hesitant and thought it's not for a newcomer. But my friends encouraged me. I also knew that the Tamil audience would encourage something new, so I accepted,” recalls Aadhi.

The going gets tough

Preparation for the role was tough. “From 85 kg I increased to 95 kg and then reduced to 65 kg for the second half where I become sick and old,” recalls Aadhi. He exercised vigorously for the muscled look and grew a beard and long hair to complete his character. He stayed in Kurandi village for one-and-a-half months to get the dialect, arrogant swagger and mannerisms of Ayyanar by watching the local folks.

“I became completely tanned, with skin peeling off. I wore only a veshti. We had no TV, computer or mobiles. I used to watch the men getting drunk so I could imitate them in the film. I recorded live conversations to practise the speech. When the unit came to visit the location, Thota Tharani’s car whizzed past me as I looked just like a local,” chuckles Aadhi who had indeed passed the litmus test.

The sick man’s make up took three hours to put on and two hours to remove. So after a long late night shoot, he would get two hours sleep and then had to be back in the make up room early morning! The heat made it worse. Shooting went on for long hours in rough terrain without even a tree for shade. But the toughest parts were the intimate scenes.

“I wasn’t comfortable and had to go for several retakes,” he recollects. Getting out of the role was equally tough. “It took me weeks to forget Ayyanar. I would talk rudely to my parents and react arrogantly, always speaking the Madurai dialect.

Getting rid of the beard and long hair after five months, was the first step towards becoming my old self. Being with my friends helped greatly. When I first came back and saw TVs, computers and mobiles, they looked completely alien!” recalls Aadhi.

Future plans

Aadhi is currently doing S Pictures Eerum, directed by Arivu Azhagan. The exact opposite of Ayyanar, he plays a city-bred, subtle, level headed youth. Samy’s next, Sarithiram is a fully commercial action film with Raj Kiran and Ganja Karuppu.

About the future he says, “I am grateful to Samy. I wasn’t confident, but he had faith in me and moulded me. I have three very varied movies and my future depends on the audience’s response to me.

I personally would love to work with directors like Gautham, Ameer, Sasikumar, Venkat Prabhu, Bala and Selvaraghavan.” Aadhi’s motto in life are dad's words, ‘Success and failure should never take you high nor low.’ With a balanced outlook to life and the courage of conviction in his eyes, looks like this new kid on the block is set to go places.

Dream debut

Aadhi’s famous three-and-a-half minute Jallikattu scene was cut from the film due to a protest by the Animal Welfare Board and a court case on the sport. Aadhi was deeply disappointed. “It was my opening scene which establishes the character. Samy told me we could use a dupe but I wanted to do the Jallikattu scene myself.

Maybe I had grown accustomed to roaming with bulls and cows by then! I actually played the sport amongst a live Jallikattu we had organised, complete with protective measures in place.

Only the final scene where I turn the bulls head was filmed in close up with the bull safely segregated,” recalls Aadhi. Later the case was resolved but it was too late to include the scenes in the film.

The hard work did pay and Aadhi received a good response. The film ran for 75 days and distributors recoverd their investments. “You didn’t perform like a newcomer,” was the common refrain.

He won the MGR Sivaji Award and the Old is Gold award for best newcomer while being a nominee for the Vijay TV award for best debutant (which finally went to Karthi).

Movie Saroja a road trip thriller

ACTUALLY, situation demands that you atleast sport a six pack if you want to be a successful Kollywood hero. Sarath Kumar or Suriya are no exceptions and Vijaykanth-waistlines simply won’t do.

Here’s where it beats you that director Venkat Prabhu does a movie with the likes of Mirchi Siva, Premgi ‘enna kodumai saar idhu’ Amaren and SP Charan as protagonists. Vaibhav, the new face in the movie, does pull of a macho look, however.

But again, like Venkat Prabhu’s previous Chennai 6000028, this isn’t a herobased script. In fact, the director explains that Chennai 600028 was not even a storybased movie at all, but just life in anyone’s locality, completely uncut. “But Saroja does have a story. It’s a thriller whose climax begins in a quick 40 minutes.

And the pace just doesn’t slacken for you to sit back on your seats ever,” he explains. There’s a story, and then, there’s fun in it, situational.

Simply put, there’s Premgi in his element, who has another one-line refrain (like Enna Kodumai Saar idhu) in this movie as well. “It’s a thriller, alright, but I can’t make a serious movie with guys like Premgi.

He is the guy who spread a word that he was the hero of Santhosh Subramaniyam and Jayam Ravi, was just his friend doing a cameo. He’s doing the same with Saroja too, but let me tell you, all four men are heroes of the movie. SP Charan and Vaibhav play Telugu-speaking people in the movie.

And Jayaram plays a serious police officer, as opposed to all funny roles. In fact, my villain Sampath is a good looker and is even shown having a love life in the film.

It’s not just another movie and care has been taken to make it look like a different road trip film,” explains the director, who adds that directing is more common sense than a curriculum to study, not requiring him to work as an assistant or study direction.

Saroja has music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, composed in a record two days. Cranking the camera is Shakthi Saravanan, who was under the scanner for his dull, jaded work in Chennai 600028. “Not many realised that it was to give a neighbourhood look to the movie.

But this time, it’s going to be a glossy rich look like that of a Hollywood movie,” he adds.

And why? “Because we want to tell people that we Chennai 600028 boys can actually do a technically sound movie with finesse, and not just be funny. We are not like that only.”

'Acting happened by chance'-Ragini

SHE seems down-to-earth, dignified and very much in love with what she's doing. Happy to be acting in yet another Sundar C film ( after her debut 'Sandai'), Ragini is going to be seen soon in Thee.

So how did she come into showbiz? “Acting happened just by chance,” says Ragini, who happens to be related to none other than Khushboo. “My akka is Khushboo’s anni,” she explains. “When I used to come down from Malaysia and visit her, she would ask me if was interested in acting. I was already interested in dancing.

So I decided to take the opportunity to act when it came after I completed my education,” smiles the trained Bharatnatyam dancer.

The savvy gal has done her undergraduate studies in the US and ran an event management company in Malaysia before her jump into tinseltown.

And she seems to be getting enough opportunity to showcase her talent in Kollywood quite early in her career. She played a modern girl in Sandai and is a housewife with two kids in the forthcoming Thee. So how difficult has her journey been in tinselville so far? “I was lucky to have these opportunities to learn so much from Sundar C.

He is so easy to work with,” she gushes, all praise for him. “He is very simple and down to earth with anyone he meets. Despite being so senior he would sit with us under the trees and have lunch. He is untouched by the ‘caravan culture’. I have learnt so much.”

Thee is a film with a message for society and other costar is the sizzling Namitha. Is Ragini flooded with more offers after her successful Sandai? “Aadi kept projects on hold but now I will be looking at more of them soon,” concludes the gal. With all the family support thrown in, Kollywood should be a cakewalk for the talented young lady.

Shriya and dhanush to team up

DIRECTOR Mitran Jawahar and Dhanush will pair up for the second time after 'Yaaradi Nee Mohini' for a movie. Shriya plays the heroine Actor Dhanush, who is currently working on 'Padikkadhavan' with Suraj, will next be doing a movie with director Mitran Jawahar.

The movie, yet to be titled, will have Shriya pair up with the actor for the second time after 'Thiruvilayaadal Aarambam'.

Sivaji Film Circuit will produce the movie and other details about the cast and crew are yet to finalized. The movie’s storyline is said to be an adaptation of the movie Arya, though changes will be made in the storyline and the second half of the movie, according to the director.

Devisri Prasad, who is now doing movies like 'Kandasamy' and 'Villu,' is composing music for this movie as well. This will be the first time that Devisre Prasad and Dhanush will team up for a movie as well.
